What is the difference between the phrases? I thought "for instance" was more formal. Is it correct? I appreciate your help.

The two phrases are kind of confusing. I can not tell the difference by reading the difinitions in dictionaries. I would like to hear your opinions.

You can also use "e.g." Latin Exempli Gratia, = English "for example"
