For + clause

Could you check whether the underlined part of the follwing sentence is grammatically right?
As far as I know, a preposition is a conneting word indicationg the relation of the noun's relationship to another word, sitting before a noun or a noun substitute, but not clauses, which constitute a whole simple sentence.
Thank you.

It was hope for the President Karzai would provide that future during his 12 years in office. But it`s now his successor who this Afghans are banking on.
