For avoiding

Hello. One of my pupils used this sentence "we should turn the gas off and electricity for avoiding fire" and the inspector of English was attending my session. He didn't like it and he said it doesn't exist in English this for avoiding and I was supposed to correct it right away.

The infinitive is natural, not the gerund.

We should turn the gas and electricity off to prevent an accidental fire. 
We should turn off the gas and electricity to prevent an accidental fire.
