"For" at the beginning of a sentence

If a sentence begins with the word for, how am I supposed to read it to fully understand it? In particular, I see this happen very much is scripture. I have a hard time understanding how to read the sentence and what it really means because I do not know how to read "for" at the beginning of the sentence. Any ideas?

The word "for" is used as an alternate for the conjunction "because".
Example:- For she was unhappy, she went upstairs.

It says that because she was unhappy, she went upstairs.
