For animals or pets, he, she or it?

Sometimes I find that "He" is used as pronoun to refer to animals or pets, sometimes "it", or even "she". I'm confused. When should we use "he" or "she" to refer to an animal or pet? When not?

Pets always get a ***, one way or another. If you have a pet oyster named "Shelly", it could be a boy or a girl, but never an "it". Your two pet earthworms, Ferdinand and Isabella, are male and female, respectively, hermaphroditic though they be.

  • Wild mammals and birds are usually called by their *** when it is known, as it often is in those groups.
  • I guess the pronoun still defaults to "he" for them, they not having feminism.
