for an extension of the deadline

I hadn't finished my report, so I asked the teacher for an extension of the deadline.
... for extending the deadline.

Neither is good in my opinion. A deadline crosses the arrow of time not runs parallel with it, so extend is a bad choice. You need a word such as alter, change or move .
