For a very long time

A while ago I asked about the 'till the cows come home'. And it came clear that it isn't used in formal writing. Today, however, I came across with an idiom 'till/until kingdom come'. Could this, therefore, be used in a formal writing, in essays, for example?

The first idiom you mentioned had a rural context, this one has a religious one:
