For a / the second straight year

Toyota is expected to post operating losses for a 2nd straight year in fiscal 2009, amid sluggish global auto sales.

Why is 'a' used here?
Because the company has yet to post the fiscal 2009 losses?
Is 'for the 2nd straight year' also correct here?
Thanks.

Either is correct. 'A' because it is first mention of the idea. 'The' because it is a specific year of losses or because it is 2009.
