Does the underlined part work naturally? No.

For some reason, he put the car in neutral and kept pressing the accelerator.

In N. America, I seldom hear 'accelerator'. People say 'gas-pedal'.

I don't think that would be 'engaging' (a gear). It's when you put the car into a gear other than neutral that you are engaging a gear.

The usual phrasing for this is "For some unknown reason".
