Dear teacher,

I am confused using "for" when I came across these sentences. Please make me understand them.

1- If had not been for kelly's intervention, the fight would have become physical.


2- They seek to understand abstract concept such as truth, beauty, right or wrong and look for deeper reasons for why we think the way we do.
