Does "for" refer to "they"? Or "something"

"They" wouldn't be an object of a preposition in the first place, but for other reasons, I would say that "something" is the object of "for."

Your mate wouldn't expect to be complimented for something they (he/she) do routinely.

I'm wondering why they said "...wouldn't expect..."
Why didn't they say "...will not expect..."?
