Context: When we are eagerly waiting for an occasion we tend to use this here.
A student just asked whether this is OK.
Though I thought I had been using it and hearing it in my place, I wanted to know whether it is common among natives.

I'm inclined to say that "There is still a week before Christmas" or "There's still a week until Christmas" would better convey the sense of eagerness you mentioned.
