About 'for other humans...' is it an adverbial phrase, or an adjectival phrase?

Good. So it could be "A sympathy for other humans suffering from misfortune grew in her" instead, but then the subject would be a bit long and the modifier was put at the end of the sentence, which might be why such 'split' happened?

Not split for length, but split for focus.

AH, that 'old/new information' thing. That could also be the reason. But I think the reason for the split could be either, or both.
