how is 'for' used here? what meaning does it have? is it used as a preposition? how is it different from the sentence, 'what is a state?'

2. For some say it is the movement of the universe, and others say it is the sphere itself.

again, how is 'for' used here? what does it mean? is it used as a prep?

when do we use 'for' in front of sentence generally?
