footwear/shoes

There are hundreds of them. Well-known appliances, electronics, footwear, apparel and computers-the famous brands-they're what we call name brands.

Hi,

Is "footwear" in the above interchangeable with "shoes?" Thanks.

Top answer

Footwear covers everything which covres your feet. Sandals, slippers, wellington boots, etc are footwear.

I think my post on the other thread is relevant here. If you use "shoes" I think you should use "clothing" instead of apparel. The other items have not been elegant-ized yet, although I am sure there will come a day when we buy electronicware.

I dislike the creeping "wear" and even more insidious "ware"-- flatware, glassware, and now tableware, for goodness' sake.

With the popularity of "thong" underwear, there is too much opportunity for hilarious misunderstanding if we continue to call the plastic shoes by that name. I know a woman whose teenage daughter has begged her not to say "thongs" any more.
