Footnote

Hello! I've got a text to translate about Chinese hermits and one of them lives in a rather poor hut. There is a sentence: "The hermit said that he had no title, that the hut was his best footnote". Could anyone, please, tell me what does "footnote" mean in this context? What is the synonym for it? Help me, please. Anna

Are you translating from English?
If so, your text written by a native speaker of English?

I don't understand the role that the hut plays in this text. To me, it would be wittier if the hermit said 'I have no title. I am just a footnote'.

Am I missing something obvious here?
