Foothold;ease into

Hi,

1) "The teacher didn't try to overload us. His approach was based on slowly easing us into the new semester."

I'm looking for a synonym for 'ease into', but I can't think of anything. Any suggestions? What about 'phase into'?

2) Can foothold be used in the following way?

"I didn't know how to go about writing my paper on media literacy, but once I established a foothold (something that helped my writing flow), it was all good.

Thank you.
