foot: the basic unit of verse meter consisting of any of various fixed combinations or groups of stressed and unstressed or long and short syllables. (www.m-w.com)

In other words, a foot of poetry can be thought of as a rhythm that is repeated throughout a poem. Most often a foot consists of two or three syllables, only one of which is stressed.
