Hi,

In Fool that he was!, is that relative pronoun or conjunction?

Is that the ellipsis of what sentence? What is the rule here?

Hi Quoc, In Fool that he was! , is that relative pronoun or conjunction? I'm not good at naming things, but I'd say it's a conjunction.

Hi,

In

Fool that he was, he dived into an empty swimming pool! (1)

Are you sure fool is a noun? I think fool is an adjective here. If fool is a noun, I agree that the subordinate clause is added to the exclamatory noun. But if fool is an adjective, how do you explain ?

Please read again my reply. I have modified that.

Fool is still a noun here. It is saying the man is a fool, not that he behaved in a foolish manner.

If you want to have an adjective version, you have to say 'Foolish as he was....'

Compare to

Man - noun

manly - adjective

Hi,

Is (1) correct?

Foolish that he was, he dived into an empty swimming pool! (1)

If yes, how to change (1) in subordinate clause?

Tung QuocHi,

Is (1) correct? No, you have changed Nona's suggested phrase and, in so doing, simply made it incorrect. Follow Nona's advice, Quoc. You can say either "Foolish as he was" or "Fool that he was".

Foolish that he was, he dived into an empty swimm
