FOOD v. FEED

I have bought a packet of dog´s food and it is written there: Premium Dog Feed.

Can anybody explain to me what the difference between the nouns FOOD and FEED is? The OALD does not explain the difference.

I do agree with you. "Feed" is food for animals. It can be uncountable or countable, in which case it refers to a particular kind or type of animal food. "High-protein feeds", for example, means "high-protein kinds/types of animal food".

Think of it in these simple terms.

'Feed' is food that the farmer 'feeds' to animals.

Natural food that animals find for themselves would thus not be 'feed'.

However, because of our more personal relationship with them, pets normally have 'food', not 'feed'. So, labelling something as 'dog feed' seems like rather unnatural wording. Perhaps it was not produc
