Food such as baked potatoes are/is eaten

In the sentence, "To commemorate it fireworks are also let off and quite often food such as baked potatoes are eaten", shouldn't the word 'food' be followed by a singular verb 'is eaten' rather than the plural 'are eaten'?

Thanks.
