food over

The was lots of food over after the feast. So I thought it would be good to take some of it to home so that my children could eat it.

It will be nice of you if you tell me why the preposition "to" should not be used before home in this context. Because usually we go to "somewhere".

"Home" doesn't need a preposition. You "go home", "bring something home"; you "go somewhere", too. But you go "to the butcher's, the baker's, school, church" etc...

That's just the way it is...

Because "lots" is a plural...

There was a lot of / there were lots of. No?

No. It is still "food" that controls the verb in this context:

Lots of food/A lot of food/Much food/Some food - all will take "was"

But isn't it more correct to use "a lot of" with an uncountable, then?
