Following,leaving

"It’s been close to two weeks since Actor-politician Vinod Khanna passed away following prolonged illness, leaving his near and dear ones, the film fraternity and his fans in remorse. The actor died on April 27 of bladder cancer at a hospital in Mumbai. He was 70."

I read the above on Facebook. Are "following" and "leaving" present participle? What do they modify or refere here and are there any signal word to suggest that the ing-form should be used?
Thanks
