Follower and adherent

Hi, In the next sentence they write Campbellites seems like it droves from his name campbell that can imples they were adherent but I believe there is still a different between follower and adherent would you explain?

I found this explantion for follower
One who subscribes to the teachings or methods of another; an adherent
