Followed and stopped

Can I say,

One day, May was walking home. A van followed her and (then) stopped. A man approached her.

As far as I know it has to be "had followed", because the event took place earlier than the other. You could say "stopped next to her/him. Wait for other opinion ,furthermore the sentences don't sound very natural.
