Follow up and down?

Hi, everyone.

Could you tell me what "up" and "down" here means?

I followed the girl down, as I had followed the girl up and she stood the candle in the place where we had found it.

Thanks

"down" and "up" refer to directions that are perceived as "down" and "up" by the narrator, either because of a physical change in elevation, or for some other locally relevant reason, or perhaps for little concrete reason. We often talk of going "up/down the road", for instance, even when there is no hill, sometimes to mean little more than "along the road".
