Folklore

Hi there!

Is it ok if I say:

"His words soon became folklore"

...with the meaning that his words were so funny & memorable that everybody repeated them and made them famous, by word of mouth? I couldn't find a clear answer by googling it.

Thanks a lot!

You could say that. I have heard it used more about an escapade than a statement, e.g., "John's capsizing the boat at Lake Washington on July 4th had become folklore." But, it would not be incorrect to use it about a statement, although, by its nature, I would think one would use it sparingly to prevent its losing its meaning from overuse.
