"fold" / "go bankrupt"

Hello teachers,

The company folded in 2000 due to funding difficulties.

If a company folds, does that mean it goes bankrupt?

I think in this case it means "collapsed on itself."

"Folded" means "went out of business", which doesn't necessarily mean bankruptcy. Not all bankruptcies end in a business ceasing to exist, and not all businesses that cease to exist go through bankruptcies.
