Fogy or old fogy

Hi,

What's the difference between 'fogy' and 'old fogy'?

If the person is young, can I say 'he is a fogy'?

Thanks a lot.

In my experience, this word is almost archaic. I only see it in the phrase 'old fogey'.

I don't hear it used for a young person. We'd usually express the meaning in some other way.

Hi Clive,

Thanks for your answer. In what way would you express the meaning for young people?

Hi,

The word 'fogey' suggests the idea of 'old' so strongly that it's a bit like asking 'How do you describe someone young as old'? I mean it's hard to find a direct equivalent.

Maybe 'old-fashioned' or 'dull' or 'not with it'.
