Focused on or focusing on (ING vs ED)

I'd like to know if there's any difference between these two sentences:

  • ...a research centre focused on artificial intelligence
  • ...a research centre focusing on artificial intelligence

I believe they're both correct?

Then why are these two not both correct?

  • Surviving the times, the great walls was listed as a heritage site.
  • Survived the times, the great walls was listed as a heritage site.

Is there a name for this grammar rule that I can research? Thanks to anyone who can help clear this up for me.
