Focus group

"The bank hired a research firm to hold focus groups with Canadians to get their opinion on the new currency."

What is "to hold focus groups"? Should it have been "to hold focus group MEETINGS"?

Top answer

'to hold' in this instance means 'to conduct' or 'to have' - it is being used in the sense that groups of people will be gathering together but they have been organised by a particular company or organisation. A 'focus group' may be a group of people who have been invited to attend. They are not 'meetings' in the general sense of the word.
