Fly over?

Is it possible to say, “The plane is flying above the Pacific”? Is it more common to say, “fly over the Pacific”?

Top answer

A rough impression: above the Pacific — in the air above the Pacific Ocean, as opposed to above the Atlantic, above London, above Tokyo, above Australia over the Pacific — crossing the Pacific Ocean; moving from Japan to California or moving from Alaska to Australia, etc. Both are fine, but with slightly different meanings. I live in California.

  • If I fly to China, I will be flying over the Pacific, so by logical deduction, I will be above the Pacific at every point in time during the flight.
  • Suppose it were possible for someone to call me from California during the flight: Where are you?
