Flunking out of college

Can you please explain what is flunking out here? and also 1.7 grade I'm not sure I understand it... thanks.

I was flunking out of college I had a 1.7 grade point average

flunk ~ fail an exam; fail to pass a course
flunk out of college ~ fail so many courses that you will not be accepted to pursue any more courses (You will have to leave.)

grade point average ~ the average of all grades in all courses you have taken during your college years

Most colleges consider 4.0 the highest grade. A grade point average of 1.7 is therefore extremely low.
