When the Olympics first started, there was no live broadcasting. Tapes had to be flown from the venue back to be played. I would replace played with broadcast /shown.

I'm sure the tapes could be played at the Olympics, but they could not be broadcast/shown to the public from there - they had to be flown back to the studios.
