Flood VS. flooding

Hi, do I have to differentiate between flood and flooding or ballroom dance and ballroom dancing? Thanks a lot in advance

Thanks. For example, I'd like to learn ballroom dance/ ballroom dancing this semester. In addition, we got huge damage. because of the flooding / the flood. Come to think of it, this is the same issue about usage of "rain and raining" I still do not know well. Thank you very much.
