Song Writing & Lyrics

Flightless Bird, American Mouth

These are lyrics of the song 'Flightless Bird, American Mouth '. Could you tell me what the 'big pill' is? And why did the composer say that 'I was a quick boy'? Is it mean 'I'm a poor boy'? I know this is a famous song especially after the movie of 'Twilight Saga' made a hit, so could you show me some article about the explanation or interpretation? Thank you in advance.

I was a quick wet boy
Diving too deep for coins
All of your street light eyes
Wide on my plastic toys
Then when the cops closed the fair
I cut my long baby hair
Stole me a dog-eared map
And called for you everywhere

Have I found you?
Flightless bird, jealous, weeping
Or lost you?
American mouth
Big pill looming

Now I'm a fat house cat
Nursing my sore blunt tongue
Watching the warm poison rats
Curl through the wide fence cracks
Kissing on magazine photos
Those fishing lures thrown in the cold and clean
Blood of Christ mountain stream

Have I found you
Flightless bird, grounded, bleeding or lost you, american mouth
Big pill stuck going down

Hi I may be wrong, but I think the first line is 'I was a quick wit boy'. To be quick-witted is to be clever - quick to work things out I think the writer then goes on to say that, later on, he had to choose whether to change his way of life and he didn't like that. It was like having to swallow an unpleasant dose of medicine - big pill going down That's my interpretation Dave

Hi

I'll correct myself. The first line could be 'quick wit' or 'quick wet'

The phrase relates, I think, to 'diving for coins', where you have to be quick, wet and quick-witted. I'm no expert, but here is a link ...
