Flee / flee from

Is there any difference in meaning between "flee something" and "flee from something"?

For example:

Tens of thousands of women, men and children have fled the fighting.

Can "from" be added after "fled" in the above sentence without altering its meaning?

Yes, 'from' is optional. Since 'from' is redundant, it might be used in slightly less formal situations.
