Flat/apartment number in addresses

It really confuses me -no grammar/English book that i have mentions how to write apartment numbers, when writing adresses on letters. Do all Englishmen live in separate houses? Emotion: wink No blocks of flats? Emotion: stick out tongue I can live at 43 highstreet, but where's my apt in all this? How to write it? Do you ever do it or maybe the mailman needs your name only?

Thank you AlpheccaStars! This helps a lot, although I think they write it in a different way in the UK? To be honest, the place where the apt. number is written is a surprise to me. But now I know how to address letters to the USA, I am wiser now

In Canada, the unit # and the street address are reversed.
