Flat statements, no hesitation. They jived with the letter.

Hi

I was watching the movie Rear Window and it had the phrase "jived with the letter". I don't get the meaning of this phrase and 'http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/jive?s=t' has no meaning which doesn't really make sense here. Could you please help me with it? Thank you.
