fixing to

Hi,

On the TV news,I just heard someone say this, from a radio message in Iraq.

'Help, we're taking fire, I'm fixing to get killed'.

I thought fixing to had a meaning related to planning to, eg 'I'm fixing to go to Denver tomorrow', yet this was said in the heat of the moment.

Perhaps someone from the USA can comment on the usage of this phrase?

(I think that the speaker survived in the end)

Best wishes, Clive

I'll second that. I think Nef has it exactly right. It can mean "about to".

It seems to extract the "expectation" from "planning".
