Fix up (4)

1. They fixed up the house before they moved in.

2. They fixed the house before they moved in.

What is the difference in meaning btw (1) and (2)? In this case, do fix and fix up have the same meaning and are they interchangeable?

I think "fixed up" means that they made the house more comfortable before moving. It might mean they cleaned it, put in furniture, things like that. They didn't have to make any major repairs.
