Fivejedjon

Fivejedjon, because you're British, I'd love your input on these per BrE. I just want to know if the commas and full stops go inside/outside as I've done. Please, no recasts to reported speech.

1. I like his sentence 'It is what it is'.

Period outside because not a direct quote.

2. I like the proverb 'Discretion is the better part of valor'.

Period outside because not a direct quote.

3. The sign said, 'Keep off the grass'.

The sign did not contain ending punctuation, so the period goes outside as shown.

4. The sign said, 'Keep off the grass.'

The sign had terminal punctuation, so the period goes inside.

5. His email said, 'On May 1, 2012, there will be a meeting .... Thanks for your support".

Not a direct quote, so period goes outside as shown.

6. The company policy states 'Termination of employment will result if intoxicants are found in an employee's system'.

Not a direct quote, so period goes outside as shown.

Thank you.

As I have said before, I am not an expert on punctuation. Personally, I would put all those full stops (BrE) after the quotation mark. As I have also said, we British do not generally worry about these finer points of punctuation.

  • If we are writing for publication, the publisher's editors will impose their system, whatever that may be.
