Five-four?

Hi dear friends
I would be very grateful if you answer my question:
What is meant by "five-four" in this sentence? and What does the word "compact" mean here?

She was perhaps six full inches taller than Mary's compact five-four.

Thank you very much
Hossein

Thanks a lot, dear mvalle3

your reply is very helpful, but I don't know if your idea about 5-4 has a grammatical basis or just your opinion. I want the other friends to tell me their idea.
