Let me explain why I am having problems with this pair (fitting room / dressing room)

According to my Longman:

(1) fitting room - an area in a shop where you can put on clothes to see how they look [= dressing room American English]
(2) dressing room (American English) - a room or area in a store where you can try on clothes [=

I wouldn't call it a dressing room, that's all I can say. In my AmE, a dressing room is backstage near the green room.

Im from the southern Indiana/eastern Kentucky area, and we grew up calling it a dressing room for a room in a department store that you try on clothes. I didn't hear if fitting rooms until I came to central Nebraska.
