Fits and starts

Hello everybody. Here is a nice post about vomit.
Take a look at the sentence, please:

She vomited in fits and starts.

Does it mean that she was starting to vomit and stopping because of the fits (she was in convulsions)?
Thank you

When something happens in 'fits and starts' it means that it is very on and off..it happens...then it stops....then it happens....then it stops.....then it happens......then it stops.
