Hello Anon, "Fit for purpose" is a phrase which has acquired a sudden vogue among British journalists. It means "efficient enough for its stated purpose"; or more simply, "good enough to do what it has to do". Its present popularity dates from May 2006, when John Reid replaced Charles Clarke as Home Secretary, and described his new department as "not fit for purpose".
