Fished the seas/sea

Lin Mo-lian, Mazu's real name, was an attractive girl and was respected and well-liked by everyone in her village. She was also revered for her ability to forecast the weather. This gift was especially advantageous to the fishermen who fished the seas in the area.

Hi,

I wonder why it's "fished the seas" in the above instead of "fished the sea?" Are both right? If yes, are there subtle nuances? Thanks.

Thanks, Jim.

But I wonder why it's seas instead of sea since for us Chinese there is only one sea in one area. What does seas exactly refer to? A few seas?

Different places in the sea. Waters is used the same way. In the waters off the coast of Britain ~ Different places in the water off the coast of Britain.

It's a little too poetic to have a very exact referent.
