Fish / Fishes

As taiwandave posted (http://www.EnglishForward.com/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=33177), "fishes" is the alternative plural form of "fish". But it's seldom used.

Fish is both singular and plural within a species. One salmon in a fish, three salmons are 3 fish. Fishes is the plural when you have more than one species. One salmon is a fish, but one salmon and one flounder are 2 fishes.

I didn't make this up (how could I).

Incidentally the correct plural of salmon is salmon ;-) Just like nearly all kinds of fish there is no separate plural form (though there are exceptions such as rays or sharks).

Fishes is used when talking about different spiecies of fish and fish(p) is use when talking about the same type of fish[<:o)].

According to Michael Swan's Practical English Usage,1995 edition, page 523, words such as fish, sheep, and deer do not change in the plural

I think that's right... the word "fishes" is a plural form of "fish" when indicating more than one species. but i think it is 3 salmon rather than 3 salmons.
