Fish? a fish?

Hi.
Well, I'd like to have a quick answer.

I have this Japanese sentence (I won't write it here) that I need to translate into English.
I answered,

I wish I could swim like fish. ...(1)

But the model answer says,

I wish I could swim like a fish.

I thought it meas there are different kinds of fish when you use "fish" with numbers.
So in that case above, is (1) mistake or can you say in both ways?

Thanks in advance!
