First,second ...

Hi,

Should I use 'the' in sentences like:'When I was in (the)first,second,...grade at school,... .'?

I'm confused because at school we learned that ordinals take 'the'before them.

With such grade levels, 'the' is unnecessary, but you may use it if you like. Ordinals certainly needn't always take 'the' - what about this? -- 'First, catch your hare.

  • -- 'First, catch your hare.
  • ' but in your example, 'the' is marking the noun 'grade', not the ordinal number, anyway.
